Cora Cohen

Oblique Forms: Spray Paint Paintings, Photographs, The Hybrid Indexical Adventure Series

September 9th – October 31st

Opening reception September 9th, 3-7PM

Cora Cohen has employed a multitude of materials over the course of her forty year painting career. Some, such as pencil, oil and acrylic, are typical tools of the trade, while others—pure pigment, spray paint, certain varnishes—are often cast aside due to potential toxicity. But Cohen has always forgone the safety net, and her very willingness to flirt with danger has allowed her a birds-eye view of the abyss. Her repeat investigations of entropy through photography, drawing and painting take an interesting turn in Oblique Forms, particularly with the group of works on synthetic paper entitled The Hybrid Indexical Adventure Series. In this series, which indeed includes Cohen’s most adventurous work to date, the artist’s playing field expands with a subtle exploration of previously untapped imagery—the hidden narrative, the visual fiction that resides in all. Simultaneously dreamy and determined, Cohen’s errant lines build and/or occupy structures that hover in a visceral muck of industrial Day-Glo and nostalgic sepia tones. Agitated surface textures take on a resemblance to topography, revealing unexpected forms and perplexing spatial distortions. Through her Hybrid Indexical Adventures, her spray paint paintings and photographs, Cohen merges a sheer delight in creation and deep fascination with decay, creating oblique forms that reflect our most human needs and desires. Please join us at Abaton Garage for the opening of Oblique Forms September 9th, 3-7PM. Refreshments will be served throughout the afternoon and evening. A live set of by Ben Miller’s (Destroy All Monsters, Third Border) Push-Pull Quartet will begin at 6:00. For more information regarding this event, Contact Abaton Garage
