Abaton Garage is proud to present Strange Fruit, an exhibition of works on paper and film by New York artist Cora Cohen. Ms. Cohen (b.1943) is among America’s foremost abstract gestural painters. For over 40 years she has been exploring an improvisational approach to art, creating rigorous compositions that unravel the DNA of painting. With an arsenal of materials, including powdered pigment, oil pastel, acrylic paint and graphite, Cohen pushes her medium to distress and breakdown, producing works of unsettling abstract opticality. In Strange Fruit, the artist shifts her focus away from the physical concerns of painting and toward the human condition of the viewer with altered (painted and chemically enhanced) X-rays and photographic imagery. Materiality itself is held under intense scrutiny while the landscape of the body is in Cohen’s radar. Entropy is the main subject of Cohen’s photographs, which capture quiet moments of decay, such as melting snow and rotting garbage on the city streets, crumbling buildings, and, on a more personal note, her own hand frozen in time, spilling her dead mother’s ashes into the Hudson River.

Directions:

From NYC take the Newark-bound PATH train to Journal Square. Taxis are available on Kennedy Boulevard, directly in front of the station. The ride to Abaton Garage takes less than five minutes and costs approximately $5. If you prefer to walk, simply stroll down Kennedy Boulevard about 3/4 of a mile, until you reach Gifford Avenue. Then turn right; 100 is in the middle of the block.
